It already seems Starfield will have two major factions with many similarities to the Empire and the Stormcloaks. Arriving in the Stormcloak capital of Windhelm quickly confirms that their fight for independence comes with a xenophobic streak, and there are suggestions that Ulfric’s murder of the High King was far from honorable. The game’s opening certainly puts the Empire in a bad light, but the game relies on the moral ambiguity of its Civil War factions to the point of exhaustion.

In Skyrim, the Empire is made more morally ambiguous, but the more players learn, the muddier the waters become. Despite the higher stakes, it is also evident that, as in Skyrim, humanity has not lost its appetite for petty conflicts. Starfieldthe main quest, like SkyrimThe plot of World-Eater appeals to the existential and promising “last voyage of humanity” and answers the “greatest mystery of life”. The more this is revealed about the game, however, the more structural similarities between the stories in Bethesda’s new IP and Skyrim seem apparent. Publication date franchise and assuring fans that a more traditional Bethesda RPG, focused on freedom above all else, was on the way. When Todd Howard called out Bethesda’s new sci-fi RPG Starfield “ Skyrim in space, ”it was easy to write the commentary as a call to the studio’s greatest hits, ignoring the eventful recent history of the studio.
